HYFLEX - Storing hydrogen to help save energy

HYFLEX aims to enhance energy efficiency by establishing a hydrogen storage facility (10-tonnes capacity) and expanding the existing methanol plant with new electrolysis capacity.

The “HYFLEX – Flexible Hydrogen Storage for Power-to-X and Grid Optimisation” project utilises European Energy's PtX infrastructure at the Kassø site in Aabenraa Municipality (DK). It involves the development of a sophisticated hydrogen storage facility, capable of holding 10 tonnes of hydrogen (equivalent to 500 MWh of energy), along with associated compressors. Additionally, the project will increase the existing methanol plant’s electrolysis capacity by 10MW.

The initiative aims to optimise operations by maximising the use of electricity generated from the Solar Park Kassø. It's designed to effectively balance the energy operations in relation to the public electricity grid. The focus is on partially decoupling the plant’s functionality from the immediate electricity production, thereby reducing energy costs related to large-scale electrolysis in Denmark.

Furthermore, the project will support South Jutland's green energy sector by offering skill-building activities, ensuring the region has the necessary expertise for future advancements in renewable energy technologies.
